2023 Medal of Valor Recipients

Adam Von Baun

Adam Von Baun is a PIII+1 within K9 Platoon of the LSPD's Metropolitan Division. On January 1 2023, Von Baun was on-duty as a K9 Officer, with his dog Vader, assigned to the Strawberry Area. At 03:32 p.m., the LSPD received several 911 calls, from victims of a mass shooting as Los Santos International Airport - Von Baun was one of the first officers assigned to respond.

Von Baun, and patrol officers, arrived on scene at LSIA to gun fire coming from inside the Arrivals Terminal. Von Baun immediately exited his vehicle and opened fire on the attacker. Shots were exchanged between officers and the attacker for approximately 40 seconds, before the attacker began to run towards officer's and civilians. It was at this moment that Von Baun noticed an improvised explosive device (IED) strapped to the abdomen of the attacker. Officer Von Baun swiftly took action, shooting the armed assailant once in the head, neutralizing him and the explosive he planned to use.

Von Baun remained as incident commander for a majority of the scene, coordinating units and setting up a perimeter with evacuation points. Bomb Squad arrived on scene and successfully diffused the explosive device.

Von Baun was awarded the Medal of Valor for his heroism and bravery shown during the unprecedented circumstances.

Paul Sandate

Paul Sandate is a Patrol Officer, assigned to Pacific Area. On January 25 2023, around 01:05 p.m., Officer Sandate was patrolling the Vespucci Boardwalk, near the LSPD Substation. Sandate heard gunfire near him, and eventually located two males armed with automatic assault rifles firing at a mass of civilians at the boardwalk. More patrol officers & park rangers responded to the boardwalk, after also hearing the gunfire. 

Officer Sandate, armed only with his department-issued handgun, exited his vehicle and ran towards the armed attackers, while they were firing at other officers. The two armed males opened fire on a Los Santos Park Ranger and LSPD Officer Jacob Peters - Killing Officer Peters almost instantly, unbenownst to Officer Sandate. At this point, Sandate opened fire at the armed males, successfully hitting and killing both attackers. Officer Sandate quickly apprehended both suspects, with the help of other officers, and aided in tending to downed civilians and officers.

Sandate was awarded the Medal of Valor for his heroism and bravery shown during the unprecedented circumstances.
